The harder side of the dance industry made the Netherlands an international phenomenon overnight in the 90s.

Anyone with even a little knowledge of Dutch dance history knows there was a peak that took place in the 90s. Our small country rarely saw any seismic shifts, but the Richter scale still took a heavy hit every weekend. From small illegal raves to sold-out editions of the world-famous Thunderdome: the harder side of the dance industry made the Netherlands an international phenomenon overnight.

‍
Squeaky kicks and hard techno parties?‍

‍

Dark rooms, the most incredible light shows, and raw kicks that gave you goosebumps all over. Working hard during the week, going hard on the weekend. It was simple. This brotherhood was so strong that it grew into the most famous dance culture the Netherlands has ever known.

‍

Although the genre and its listeners have aged, the hardcore scene continues to reinvent itself time and again. With countless variations, hardcore—and everything surrounding it—is bigger than ever. Yet, it still rubs the purists the wrong way. Because when can it truly be called hardcore? Why those loud squeaky kicks and hard techno? You mean early gabber and hardcore. “We invented this before you were even born, TikTok kids.”

‍

Brotherhood

‍

All joking aside: hardcore is for everyone. Young and old. Because the sense of camaraderie remains. That’s part of our scene. From gabbers to newcomers: together we are one. But the craving for that early sound doesn't go away. The old-school feeling of those illegal raves. Small clubs with a massive sound system. From the first hour until the sun comes up. Stomping to those primal, hard kicks.

‍

No nonsense, just hardcore dancing.

‍

At Burgerweeshuis, we get it. This is what we live for, too. Our building, once squatted by punks, is nothing less than a reflection of counterculture. Our stage for alternative sounds wouldn't be complete without hardcore. We are therefore proud to say that we have joined forces with Underground Hardrave. This organization doesn't beat around the bush: no nonsense, just hardcore dancing. That’s how the press release announcing the third edition—which will take place within our walls for the first time—concludes.

It’s time to relive the golden age of hardcore. Together. Here at the Burgerweeshuis. On December 6th.

No nonsense, just hardcore dancing.
