Science Café: Housing of the future
Opportunities and challenges of co-housing and other housing concepts with Dr. Darinka Czischke.
The Dutch housing market is under pressure. Not enough is being built, and many homes have become unaffordable for various groups. But there is more going on. Housing preferences are changing. People are living alone longer, the population is aging, the need for a sense of community is growing, and climate change demands a different way of building. Are the traditional terraced house and the apartment still the obvious answer?
Dr. Darinka Czischke, affiliated with the Department of Architecture and the Built Environment at Delft University of Technology, conducts international research into innovative ways of living, such as co-housing and other forms of communal living. In her research, she explores how residents, governments, housing associations, and designers can work together to develop new housing concepts that are not only affordable and sustainable, but also contribute to social cohesion.
What opportunities and challenges do these housing forms bring? What can we learn from countries where co-housing has existed for much longer? What obstacles exist in the Netherlands? The lecture offers a look at the future of living and invites us to rethink the relationship between architecture, health, sustainability, and community.
